Review: The Selection by Kiera Cass

The Selection
By: Kiera Cass
Pub. Date: April 24, 2012
Publisher: Harper Teen
Pages: 327
Source: ARC
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

I have had an ARC of The Selection on my bookshelf for months and I have no clue why I waited so long to read it. This book was amazing! I seriously loved everything about it. From the writing, to the plot, to the characters. The Selection was perfect and completely deserves the honor of becoming a TV show for The CW and I can not wait to be able to watch it in the fall.

America Singer is one of 35 girls competing to win Prince Maxon's heart. The difference between America and the other 34 girls is that she doesn't actually want to win. She loves Aspen, a servant she has been with for a few years now. But Aspen broke up with her, and she doesn't know how to move on.

American thinks Maxon is going to be a self-obsessed jerk, but he is anything but! He might be confident when it comes to being a Prince, but he is clueless when it comes to girls. He was sweet, caring and thoughtful and what started out as a friendship between America and Maxon turns into feelings. Things get even more complicated when Aspen comes back into the picture.

This is one love triangle that I can get behind! I loved both Maxon and Aspen. I know some people might not like Aspen, but I completely understood why he broke up with her, and why he thinks they can be together now. I have no idea what America is going to do, but I can't wait to find out.

I especially loved the world building in The Selection. I thought this was just going to be a bachelor type of book, but it was so much more.  I can not wait to find out about the wars, and the secrets that the King might be keeping. The writing was beautifully done and everything flowed so perfectly together. Also, that cover!! The colors scream at you and it looks beautiful in person.

I fully enjoyed this book. It was fun and quick and I am so looking forward to see what Cass has in store for us next!

Reviews: The Novella Edition~ Nine's Legacy by Pittacus Lore and Untouched by Jus Accardo

I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: Nine's Legacy
(Lorien Legacies # 2.5)
By: Pittacus Lore
Pub. Date: February 28, 2012
Publisher: Harper Collins
Pages: 144

Number Nine—when John frees him from his cell in The Power of Six, he’s ferocious, reckless, and ready to fight back. But being held captive changes a person—even a Lorien. See what Nine was like before his capture, and read about his dramatic escape from his point of view.

In I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: Nine’s Legacy, discover the story behind Nine. Before meeting John Smith, aka Number Four, before being held prisoner, Nine was hunting down Mogadorians in Chicago with his CÊpan, Sandor. What happened there would change Nine forever...
Ever since we first met Nine in The Power of Six, I wanted to know more about him. I was so excited to hear that the next The Lost Files was going to be his story. Nine's Legacy was a very quick read that completely hit the spot. I am now in love with Nine and can't wait to see him again in The Rise of Nine.

When the story starts, Nine is living in Chicago with his CÊpan, Sandor. He's a loner, who spends his days working out and learning about the war and how to defend himself. The Nine we are introduced to in The Power of Six is very different then Stanley, the lonely kid we meet in Nine's Legacy. I loved seeing his transformation to the tough guy we know now. You really see how and why he changed so much in prison, and I felt very bad for him before and during his imprisonment.

Nine' Legacy is a very quick read that will leave you very excited for the third book in the series! I for one can not wait to see where this story will take us!

Untouched
(Denazen # 1.5)
By: Jus Accardo
Pub. Date: March 28, 2012
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Source: Bought
Until he met Dez, Kale’s days were filled with violence and death. He was used as a weapon of destruction by the power hungry men of Denazen. He’s a Six. A person with an abnormal ability. Some people call them gifts, but not Kale. Kale’s touch means instant death.

But now there’s Dez, the girl he can touch, and they’re hunting down Sixes and warning them about Denazen. Kale is learning about the world outside captivity and trying to put his dark past behind him. But they underestimated how badly Denazen wanted him back.

When Dez sacrifices herself to save the new Six they’d rescued from falling into the corp’s hands, Kale is lost. Denazen has brought out its best to get the job done. Samsen, a nightmare from Kale’s past—the only person he’s ever truly feared—has come for them, and it soon becomes obvious he has his own twisted agenda.

Kale will need all his training to get Dez back and ensure they make it out, free—and alive. But will it be enough?

If your heart didn't break for Kale in Touch, then it will definitely break in Untouched. This short novella follows Kale and Dez as they try to find other Sixes like them so they can be warned about the dangers of the Denazen Corporation. Told in Kale's POV, we really get to see how someone who was their imprisoned their entire life sees the world. While it's very sad, it's also very funny and innocent.

Kale is such a broken character and I really hope that Dez's love for him can fix him. With his POV, we see how messed up Kale truly is, and what he thinks of himself. Since he doesn't talk about his feelings or his past, Dez, as well as the reader, does not realize how much pain Kale is really in.

I can not wait for the second book, Toxic. Jus Accardo is a very talented writer. She is able to pack so many emotions in such a short novella, while still keeping it light and at times, funny!

Review: Bewitching by Alex Flinn

Bewitching
By: Alex Flinn
Pub. Date: February 14, 2012
Publisher: Harper Teen
Pages: 336
Source: Bought
Bewitching can be a beast. . . .

Once, I put a curse on a beastly and arrogant high school boy. That one turned out all right. Others didn’t.

I go to a new school now—one where no one knows that I should have graduated long ago. I’m not still here because I’m stupid; I just don’t age.

You see, I’m immortal. And I pretty much know everything after hundreds of years—except for when to take my powers and butt out.

I want to help, but things just go awry in ways I could never predict. Like when I tried to free some children from a gingerbread house and ended up being hanged. After I came back from the dead (immortal, remember?), I tried to play matchmaker for a French prince and ended up banished from France forever. And that little mermaid I found in the Titanic lifeboat? I don’t even want to think about it.

Now a girl named Emma needs me. I probably shouldn’t get involved, but her gorgeous stepsister is conniving to the core. I think I have just the thing to fix that girl—and it isn’t an enchanted pumpkin. Although you never know what will happen when I start . . . bewitching.

Bewitching tells the story of Kendra, the witch from Beastly who curses Kyle. Even though I haven't read Beastly, I saw the movie and I was interested in Kendra's character. I was very excited to find out that we were going to get a whole story about her and her past. Bewitching did not disappoint and I was pleasantly surprised on how much I actually enjoyed the story.

Bewitching is really two stories in one. We have the history of Kendra as the first story. We find out where she came from, who her family was and how she came to learn she was a witch. We also learn about some of the other people that she has "bewitched" through the centuries. In every instance she was just trying to help, but usually it made things worse for everyone involved. I loved these stories and the history aspects of them, including the Plague and the Titanic. Alex Flinn took classic fairy tales and added her own spin to them, including Hansel and Gretel, The Princess and the Pea and The Little Mermaid. My favorite story was about Louis, Dauphin of France.

The second story is about Emma, who Kendra goes to school with in the present day. Emma's story was very sad and broke my heart many times. In a classic Cinderella spin, Emma lives with her mother, her stepfather and stepsister. Her stepsister, Lisette is a horrible person who has everyone wrapped around her finger. No one knows how truly evil she is, except for Emma. After Lisette steals Emma's boyfriend, Emma asks Kendra for help, and Kendra reluctantly agrees.

I really loved the characters of Kendra and Emma. Kendra seems so eccentric in Beastly, and she is, but she is also vulnerable and lonely and my heart went out for her. She is a good witch just trying to help the people who deserve to be helped. Emma was also a wonderfully written character. Her voice jumped out of the pages, and I felt every single thing that Emma felt.

The ending was such a nice surprise with the introduction of Travis. When he came into the story, I loved where it took Emma and the reader, and I was completely rooting for the two of them.

Overall, I really enjoyed Bewitching and would highly recommend it to anyone. Even if you haven't read Beastly, which I have not, you will understand everything, and for those of you who have read Beastly or seen the movie, we get a little update on Kyle as well, which was a nice touch!

Review: The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

The Immortal Rules
(Blood of Eden # 1)
By: Julie Kagawa
Pub. Date: April 24, 2012
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Pages: 485
Source: Netgalley
In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

When I saw The Immortal Rules on Netgalley, I'm not going to lie, I did a little dance. I was so excited to read this book and I was not disappointed in the slightest! Julie Kagawa has created a world that is so terrifying, that while I was reading, I would have to take breaks just to breathe again.

In her post-apocalyptic, dystopian world, vampires rule. A Plague spread, killing off most of the population leading the vampires to come to power. Many humans are registered and twice a month must go into the city to give blood. The humans who are unregistered, live on the street and everyday is a struggle to find food and survive. What is worse is that the vampires aren't the scariest thing in this world. The disease caused the spread of rabids, terrifying creatures that eat humans and vampires alike.

Allison is an unregistered human who after being attacked by a rabid is given a choice, die and become a rabid or die and become a vampire. Choosing vampire, her sire, Kanin teaches her what it means to be a vampire. He tells her she must forget that she was once human because she is now a monster with no soul. She is a hunter, and she must not forget that. Kanin was a very secretive, old vampire. I loved the parts of him that we did get to know, and I really hope we get to see him again!

Allison was terrifically written. We really get to see her struggles with becoming a vampire, but still wanting to keep her human side. She is strong and determined and I liked that about her. One night she comes across a little boy, and after helping him find his family she meets a group of people trying to find Eden, a heavenly place where they would be free and safe. It is here that she meets Ezekiel Crosse, the adopted son of Jeb, the leader of this group.

Zeke was a very interesting character. He puts everyone in the group first, risking his own life to keep the others safe. He sees the good in everyone and trusts Allison completely, even though he knows nothing about her. For someone who has seen so much pain, suffering and death, he was so caring and level headed. There were many times that I felt so bad for him, I just wanted to give him a hug!

As in the Iron Fey series, Kagawa's world building is amazing. Her writing is so descriptive, it's hard not to feel that you are right in the middle of the action.

The Immortal Rules is an extremely well written book. It was a little hard at first to get into, and a little slow in the beginning, but once Allison meets Zeke and the others, the book just flew by. I think this book would appeal to the vampire lovers and even the people who are sick of vampires. There is so much action and darkness and it is completely different then other vampire books out there!

Review: Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown

Lies Beneath
By: Anne Greenwood Brown
Pub. Date: June 12, 2012
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Pages: 303
Source: Netgalley
Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistible good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.
What instantly attracted me to Lies Beneath was not only was it was in the POV of a male, but it was the POV of a mail mermaid (or merman)! How awesome is that??  Now after reading this book, I can honestly say that I loved Lies Beneath. The writing was well paced and quick, I loved every single character, even the evil mermaids and the story was intriguing and very original. There isn't one thing I didn't enjoy about Lies Beneath.

Calder and his sisters eat people to live, but unlike his sisters who enjoy capturing their prey and playing with them first, Calder wants to kill them quick so that his victims don't suffer. I really enjoyed Calder. Sure there were things about him I didn't like, but I loved watching him change and enjoyed learning about his back story, which was different from his sisters.

Ever since their mother died they have been looking for a man named Jason Hancock. Believing he is the reason behind their mother's death, the siblings have wanted nothing more then revenge. When they find him, things get a little complicated when Calder falls for Jason's daughter, Lily. This is when the story really gets good!

As far as love interests go, Lily was awesome. She was so honest and real and when she learned who Calder really was, she had the best reaction!

I am extremely interested to see where this story and the characters are going to go. Calder's family dynamic is completely different now, and I am looking forward to see how that ends up playing out in future books.

Well done Anne Greenwood Brown! I truly and utterly loved this book!!

Review: Until Next Time by Amy Lignor

Until Next Time
(The Angel Chronicles # 1)
By: Amy Lignor
Pub. Date: February 1, 2012
Publisher: Tribute Books
Pages: 225
Source: ebook from Publisher
How does a girl choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who owns her soul?

Matt and Emily were created for a specific job. Raised and trained as the ultimate angel/warrior team, they are sent down to save, defend, judge and forgive, depending on the 'life' they've been assigned. What they don't realize is that the power of human emotions, such as love, anger, passion and fear can take over even the best of souls, causing them to make mistakes and follow paths that lead to confusion and heartache.

When the reason for their training is finally revealed, the angel/warrior team find themselves thrust into a world they know nothing about. Matt takes over the life of Daniel, a young man with a great deal of baggage. Emily becomes Liz, a girl living in a remote village who relies on nothing more than her own strength to survive. A violent storm erupts one night, and framed in the window of Liz's establishment is a frightening face. Let in by the soul of a Good Samaritan, the two visitors bring with them a past full of secrets that could literally change an angel's path and a warrior's plans.

From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world that's ripping them apart.
As far as angel stories go, this one is definitely one of the most original ones that I have read! It is actually two stories in one. The first is about the angel team Elisa and Matt. There story is set in Heaven. The second story is about Liz, Jason and Daniel and takes place in 1810 Ireland. The interesting thing about this is that Liz is actually Elisa, Daniel is Matt, and well, Jason is just the human guy that Liz shouldn't have fallen in love with.

Elisa and Matt have spent their time in Heaven learning and training for their mission on Earth. They are Angel partners who are also soul mates. They are sent to Earth to understand human emotions and help the humans solve their problems. Their souls are put into the bodies of Liz and Daniel, and they have no memory or recollection about who they really are. After Liz meets Jason, her life changes b/c she falls completely in love with him, even though her soul is supposed to be with Matt.

Until Next Time was a quick read. The writing flowed nicely and I really enjoyed the ending. My favorite character was Jason. He's had a very difficult life, but the abuse he has suffered as a young boy by the hands of the lady he and his family worked for made him the man he became. Liz needed a strong man with the life she had as well and I really loved the two of them together.

I was very surprised that it was set in 1810 Ireland. I thought this completely changed the story. My blogger friend, Ex Libris Kate mentioned that the characters didn't talk like they would have in 19th Century Ireland, and I completely agree with her. This was a bit of a turn off for me.  I was also confused with what Elisa and Matt was supposed to be doing on Earth. It didn't really make sense to me until half way through the story.

Overall, I enjoyed Until Next Time. It was an interesting and original angel story. I am excited to read more from Amy Lignor.

Review: The Last Echo by Kimberly Derting

The Last Echo
(The Body Finder # 3)
By: Kimberly Derting
Pub. Date: April 17, 2012
Publisher: Harper
Pages: 358
Source: ARC
Violet kept her morbid ability to sense dead bodies a secret from everyone except her family and her childhood-best-friend-turned-boyfriend, Jay Heaton. That is until forensic psychologist Sara Priest discovered Violet's talent and invited her to use her gift to track down murderers. Now, as she works with an eclectic group of individuals—including mysterious and dangerously attractive Rafe—it's Violet's job to help those who have been murdered by bringing their killers to justice. When Violet discovers the body of a college girl killed by "the girlfriend collector" she is determined to solve the case. But now the serial killer is on the lookout for a new "relationship" and Violet may have caught his eye....
As a huge fan of The Body Finder series, I was extremely happy when I received an ARC of The Last Echo at ALA this past January. I started this book at 2pm on a Saturday, and was finished by 6. I could not put this book down! It was well written and the plot was fast paced. There was nothing I would have done differently with The Last Echo and it was easily my favorite in the series so far!

In The Last Echo, Violet is working for a secret government agency with a group of people who also have "powers". They help the FBI to solve murder cases. But this particular murder case puts Violet in more danger then anyone could have ever guessed. My heart was pumping fast the entire time. I was so afraid for Violet and the chapters from the POV of the killer were beyond creepy!

Violet and Jay are still going strong, but we see less of them then we have in the first two books. The guy that really stole the show for me was Rafe! I loved him. I kept wanting to know what his secrets were. His story is a sad one, and I definitely understand why he keeps people away. Him and Violet had an interesting connection, and I am interested to see where Derting takes us with that.

The scenes with the "Girlfriend Collector" were beyond creepy. Never receiving love from his mother, the psycho kidnaps women, ties them up, but doesn't do anything sexual. He just feeds and washes them, and paints their nails. Then when he realizes the girls will never love him the way he loves them, he kills them. CREEPY!!

The ending of The Last Echo killed me! Seriously! There was so much to wrap my head around, and I can not wait to see what happens next.
